All about luxury vinyl flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is an affordable and highly realistic alternative to genuine wood, stone, or tile. It is 100% waterproof and durable, making it ideal for wet areas like the kitchen, bath, or laundry room, but the high-end style also makes it a sought-after choice for living/dining spaces, bedrooms, and hallways. It would be impossible to find a product that gives so much value to your decorating dollar.

What is it, exactly?

This is a newer, more advanced version of the original vinyl. Considered a premium and, yet, budget-friendly product, it has multiple layers, including an underlayment, core, design layer with a top clear, strong melamine coating that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs. It's sometimes called vinyl plank flooring, referring to the material being cut to mimic hardwood boards or LVT flooring when cut into groutable squares to echo stone or ceramic tiles.

The images are taken with 3D photography, so they're clear and vibrant with knots, swirls, grains, and veining variations. The colors and patterns are brilliant. Micro beveling and embossing give the floors depth, dimension, and textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed for even more realism.

Is it durable?

Yes, and for several reasons. First, multiple layers automatically make something stronger and more firm. Second, the top coating protects the floor from scratches and aids in the waterproofing; it keeps the spills at the top just waiting to be wiped off. Finally, all vinyl is strong, but true LVF is at least 8-mm in thickness with a thick top wear layer which should measure at least 20-mils.

What does waterproof flooring mean?

This is impervious to water. LVF is constructed of waterproof materials, in this case, vinyl, so the capability is inherent from bottom to top. That means it can be submerged in liquid, such as an appliance flood or spilled on. Water-resistant flooring repels liquid, but it needs to be wiped immediately, or it will break through to soak the core.

LVF is also low maintenance, only requiring daily sweeping and periodic mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Avoid waxy-shine-promoting cleaners as they damage the urethane finish and dull the floors. Installation is also easy and fast, especially when it's a floating floor where the pieces click together, mat, then hover over the subfloor with no nails or glue.

Luxury vinyl flooring is so stylish it’s even a top choice among restaurant designers where style, function and easy cleanability is a priority.
