Considerations when shopping for hardwood flooring

Just hearing the words "wood floors" can automatically make you think of elegance and charm. They also last for decades, often looking even better with age, and are versatile enough to work with any decor and easy to maintain. There's more to it than just choosing a color, so knowing the answers ahead of time will help you choose the best.

Which version do you want?

Solid is probably the most well-known, and, as the name implies, it's one thickness throughout. Engineered hardwood is now taking a significant share of the wood flooring industry because it appeals to those who want both beauty and practicality. At the top is a slab of your species of choice, whether it's oak flooring or ash, hickory, maple, etc.

Underneath are three or more layers of genuine wood, combined with a bit of resin and placed in a crosswise position. As a result, it can be installed in some higher-than-usual moisture areas where solid isn't recommended, and there's no shrinking or contracting, so no acclimation is needed.

Think about thickness

Whether you choose solid or engineered, the density determines the number of times the floor can be refinished. Ideal for solid is ¾-inch, and it can be refinished up to six times. Engineered has a range from ⅜-inch to ½-inch and the more robust, the better. Depending on the thickness number, it can be refinished up to five times.

Do you want factory or on-site finishing?

Factory finish will let you know right away what you're getting. You'll have samples and start coordinating even before the floors arrive, and you won't be dealing with any mess. Site finish, however, offers more variety of stains and finishes, and some prefer to have greater control of sheen.
